Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Bust of Urban VIII on loan from Principe Corsini

Sala Sacchi, Palazzo Barberini, Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica in Rome
from October 6, 2022, to July 30, 2023

On view from Thursday, October 6, 2022, the National Galleries of Ancient Art will host the bronze bust of Urban VIII executed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1658. The work, on loan from Principe Corsini until July 30, 2023, to allow its close comparison with the marble version of the Portrait of Urban VIII (dated c. 1655), is on display in the Sacchi Room of Palazzo Barberini, which was newly installed in October 2021 and dedicated to the members of the Barberini family, with painted and sculpted portraits of Urban VIII and his nephews by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Giuliano Finelli, Carlo Maratti and Lorenzo Ottoni. For the first time in history, visitors will be able to admire, side by side, both the bronze bust and the marble version of the Portrait of Urban VIII, preserved in Palazzo Barberini, which constitutes its prototype.
